Finding and Leveraging Your “Desperate Why”

We hear it all the time in this industry: “Find your “why” for ultimate motivation”, “find your “why” and everything else will fall into place”, “find your “why” and its just a matter of time before things will workout”. The general idea is that when you know why your working towards something, your much more likely to follow through and take the action steps necessary in order to produce any result. Any while finding and leveraging your “why” is effective, there’s actually a much more effective method of motivating yourself that will get you to take action and go above and beyond in all that you do.

Finding and Leveraging Your “Desperate Why”

It comes to finding and leveraging what Nick Sarnicola refers to as your “Desperate Why”. Its about looking at and coming to grips with all the NEGATIVES that will occur in your life if you DON’T TAKE ACTION. What dreams will you miss out on? What won’t you be able to provide your family with? Will you be unable to pay your rent at the end of the month? When you find those “desperate whys”, you’ll actually have much more motivation then you would if you were to focus solely on your “why”.

It boils down to the fact that people take much higher levels of action when there’s a strong consequence for not doing so. People take more action when they’re being forced to move away from something vs. choosing to move towards something.

Leveraging your “why” is all about moving towards a brighter, more positive future. Leveraging your “desperate why” is all about moving away from whatever consequence you may face through you not taking action.

Rich Schefren is the first person I heard talk about this topic, and he referred to the difference in mindsets as “towards people” and “away from” people. While some people towards things, others work to get away from things. Rich went on to point out two interesting facts.

1. The need to move away from something is a MUCH STRONGER motivator than the desire to move towards something.

2. While it’s a much stronger motivator, people who are always focusing on moving away from something actually tend to be less happy overall.

My take on the matter:

Whenever my business has moved forward most, is when my back was completely up against the wall. There’s a reason you hear all of the rags to riches stories that you do in our industry. When you work from home without a boss, it’s easy to kick back and relax when you’re back isn’t against the wall. Dave Wood, the founder of Empower Network waited till he was living in a van, Ray Higdon waited until he couldn’t pay the bills on time and his girlfriend was covering the electricity… Yet both of these individuals rose EXTREMELY QUICKLY after hitting their own rock bottom.

Why? Extreme motivation.

Combining the two…

The method that will move your business forward the fastest and still let you feel happy and whole through the process is combining the two. Taking the time to figure out what your big “why” is and all of the abundance it holds for you and your future, but then also being very aware of what you’re “desparate why” is and being very aware of exactly what the consequences may be if you fail to take action and followthrough.

This combination will give you not only extreme motivation in moving away from something, but also a positive outlook on where you’re headed, which will keep you sane and happy along the way.
